SCOPE AND CONTENT
The Mary F. Carter Collection MSS 0087, is primarily related to historical and genealogical research conducted by Mrs. Carter over a 40-year span. The collection contains family research notes; obituaries; photographs; copies of deeds, wills, and marriages; family group sheets; pedigree charts; memorial cards; books; Bibles; photographs; and old ledgers. Of particular importance to the collection are folders pertinent to special subjects, such as Holston School, Holston Institute Community, Hawkins County, Sullivan County, Carter County, Washington County. The collection additionally contains information on area schools and churches. On loan, the collection is "open-ended" and will have additions in future.
BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE
Mary F. Carter was born in Sullivan County, Tennessee to Verlin Edgar Bowery (1893-1968) and Vergie Mary Ann Little (1896-1982). Mrs. Carter has conducted historical and genealogical research in East Tennessee and Southwest Virginia for more than 40 years. She held several offices over recent years such as President, Regent and Registrar for various organizations including the Daughters of the American Revolution, United Daughters of the Confederacy, Colonial Dames XVII Century, Daughters of 1812 and others.
