SCOPE AND CONTENT
This collection is comprised of correspondence (1885-1958), deeds, speech transcripts and books belonging to the family and ancestors of Joseph Cloyd Byars (1869-1954), an influential attorney who practiced in Bristol, TN-VA. The papers contain personal correspondence, legal documents, newpaper clippings, photographs, books and miscellaneous items dating from 1885-1958. Books includes pamphlets from the Methodist Episcopal Church annual meetings from 1890 to 1954. Of significant interest to the collection are the numerous letters and correspondence to clients as well as family members.


BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE
Joseph Cloyd Byars, Sr. (1869-1954) was the son of James Monroe Byars and Virginia Clark Watson. Mr. Byars married Jane Rhea Bailey (1872-1948), daughter of David Flournoy Bailey and Sarah Eleanor Preston. Joseph Cloyd Byars, Sr. (1869-1954) was an affluential attorney who practiced in Bristol, Virgina.  His daughter, Virginia D. (Jints) Byars (1901-1999) married Judge Joseph Anderson Caldwell (1884-1963).  About 1940, Judge and Mrs. Caldwell bought the Old Deery Inn at Blountville and used it as their primary residence.
